"as-is" and "not guaranteed against shipping damage" - what does it mean?

Really what is the seller trying to say? Is it just me or do these sellers actually believe these statements cover their butts in some or even most cases?

My standard form letter regarding "as-is" and "no guarantee against shipping damage" sales.

Hi,
This is a question about your "as-is" designation.
Does it mean that the unit is guaranteed to be as you described it or does it mean that the unit is guaranteed to arrive in whatever condition it arrives in. You say it works great but if it arrives and it doesn't work or works poorly will you refund the purchase price?
I don't mind paying for insurance but insurance only covers me for visible damage or loss and it only provides coverage if the seller packages the item properly. You say you are not responsible for shipping damage. But unless you properly package the item even insurance won't cover the item. You seem to be claiming you would not be responsible if the item is improperly packaged. Do you guarantee proper packaging so that the buyer can be insure himself against any possible loss.
Thanks - I'm going to bid on this item but how much I bid will depend on your response. Thanks!

Give me rhythm or give me death!
