Please.... let me explain..With the advice of all the experts here, I recently bought a used Marantz 2015 ($40 on craigslist!). I live in NYC, am very broke, have a TINY apt, and my very crappy compact stereo recently broke. At first I just wanted advice for a cheap way to power my speakers with a signal from my computer since my PC is my only source of music (no $, no space)--I was really looking for a small/cheap power amp solution, possibly a small powered mixer to add other signals (guitar/turntables). I really had no idea.
I was guided instead towards considering a vintage receiver, namely Marantz, and to be honest at first I was disappointed this suggestion wasn't going to help me keep my apt clutter free (I didn't want a big unit). Not only does my Marantz now take center stage on my desk and look awesome, I am completely blown away by the sound from it. So warm, clean, I've never heard anything like it. I was playing Nirvana's Unplugged when at the end of "Oh Me" everyone starts to clap, I was literally taken back by what I was hearing!!! The cracking of applause. The CRACKING! I've never heard such a lifelike sound. To all those out here who suggested, I thanks you, I am now a changed person.
But..... in the beginning I had hoped to not only find a cheap/small stereo solution, but also to get rid of my large guitar amp. My apt is really way to small, so small that I don't play the guitar anymore because I can't get to my amp. With my stereo needs coming first, I wanted to also see how I could also use it to play guitar out of (before I came here I was thinking about getting a small powered mixer or something, in the future I could also connect turntables should I find the space).
I have a Digitech Signal Processor with a Left and Right 1/4" plugs outputs to go to an amp (or just the Left for Mono). It also has a headphone jack. I know it wouldn't make sense to plug a guitar into a stereo because the pickups don't send an appropriate signal, but what about the outputs from my signal processor?
If this should work no problem I will most definitely do it, but I don't want to hurt my Marantz. At the same time I do not have space or money to be cautious and buy a smaller amp instead so I would appreciate the advice from someone with an explanation more then simply "why risk it". Guess I'd like to know "why" this is a bad idea.
Thanks again everyone, I appreciate all your feedback! You've lead me towards starting a serious stereo!
