new to Ipod question

My wife gave me an Ipod mini for our wedding anniversary last week (I was blown away as it was a ninth anniversary gift), and I'm trying to figure out how to download songs/ albums using the highest quality method as I will never run out of memory.
I understand that a standard download is in wac, but I think that I really want to use Apple lossless. I've searched the manual and can't find any information on how to download cd's using the Apple loseless compression.
How do I do it?
