Where could the problem be?

Hi- My system is a denon AVR-587 with Bose 301s (Please bear ;o))
And my DVD player is a Sony DVP-NS55P. I have set my multi channel receiver to just stereo as I don't have surrounds yet. The sound when playing movies in DVD is very good. And it is pretty full. I just use an off the shelf RCA connector from my DVD player to the amp. But, my audio CD performance is not satisfactory at all. Could it be because of the DVD player playing audio CDs or the connector? Will I get any improvement if I move over to an optical connector?

Thanks.
