China, Wal-Mart and technology

Remember all the kudos that $70.00 Toshiba was getting here a year or two ago? It used to be that junk sounded like junk, so the retailer could demonstrate a significant enough improvement in store to convince Joe Public to at least buy mid fi. For digital components performance upgrades are marginal. If you're listening to music as background or want to watch the latest blockbuster explosionathon a disposable Chinese made 50 player and surround-in-a-box will probably suffice.

Meanwhile, Wal-Mart is far more efficient at squeezing it's suppliers and employees, and has also been expanding into higher end tvs, the one area where Joe Public can readily see a difference, and is more likely to sink some dough.
