It all depends on what type of Bass Trap it is.If it is a 1/4 or 1/2 round Bass Trap, then they need to be mounted as close to the wall/corner as possible, preferably with no air gap between the back of the trap and the walls/corner, to be most efficient.
If it is a Full round Bass Trap, then placement experimentation with regards to the wall/corner boundries will certainly pay off due to the construction differences as each type of Bass Trap is specifically designed to address different room acoustic issues.
