I met John a couple of months prior to his passing, in the Colorado Springs facility where he was staying.I had been intending for years to meet John in person, and when I discovered he was ill I emailed his daughter Lisa asking if it would be possible for me to see him. She gave me the address of Pike's Peak Care Center on November 9, and the next day I flew there. I chatted with Lisa and Joan (John's wife) for awhile and had the privilege of speaking with John at length. In present matters (i.e., November 2006) he was confused, but when we talked about technical aspects of audio he was lucid, albeit slow.
I wish I hadn't waited all those years to take the initiative, but it was certainly an honor to meet John and I'm glad I wasn't too late. I suspect his role in audio history is yet to be fully appreciated.
