More like "audiophile on a budget", but very nice

I'm in a similar situation. I'm a student who has to pinch pennies for a while to save up for upgrades. I'm right in the middle of an upgrade fever right now, in fact... my power amp died about a week ago and I figured that that was as good an excuse as any to go all-tube.

To make it all work, I have to make a sort of "road map" or plan of attack, spelling out exactly what I'm going to buy and in what order. The basic idea here is to start as extravagant as what might be possible, then whittle and whittle and whittle some more costs away until it gets to a reasonable price. Try to be fairly even in the pricing so you can get things at regular intervals and not get discouraged.

Of my projected system, this is what I have:

Music Hall MMF-5 turntable.

Long list, eh? There's a "maybe" on there, which is the speakers (EPI M100s). If they work okay with the SET amplifier I just ordered (either 2 or 2.5 watts depending on whether it's in 45 or 2A3 configuration), they're part of the system for good. Otherwise, I'll get an old used pair of Klipsch Heresys (I might get them eventually anyway). I've got that amplifier ordered... and what's next on the list:

WooAudio 3 (preamp and head amp in one)
Scott Nixon USB Tube DAC
Ming Da MC757-RD (phono stage)

and that's it! Cost of those before shipping are roughly (when I checked) $470, $600 (inc. PSU), and $269 respectively. Considering I'm going to be selling my old things, figuring to pull in some $650 on the conservative side, that's some $690 I need to save for my whole system. I also need to get my turntable repaired (goddamned snapped a tonearm-to-cartridge wire because the connector was gripping the pin too tightly: the tweezers slipped, grabbed the green wire, and pulled it right off), get a new stylus for my Goldring (moving up from a 1012GX to a 1042), and buy various tubes, to have as backups and to experiment with extensive rolling. It'll be fun.

Stuff like this can be done on the cheap... people think we're crazy because a certain element spends thousands of dollars for things like power cords. No offense intended to them at all! It's just that people are always amazed that I can afford a really good stereo, and it's really not all that difficult.
