I was eating lunch out with some colleagues outdoors at the local Quizno's sandwich shop in El Segundo, CA. Most of the music that they play over their outdoor sound system is run of the mill stuff. My colleagues just liked to bitch about work at lunchtime anyway, so this experience is usually pretty boring. So I'm sitting there, and all of a sudden I notice that the song they're playing on the sound system is "Mr. Kenyatta" by Lee Morgan. I realized the person picking the music was definitely not the ordinary person. For me, this kind of thing makes me completely lose track of the conversation and instead focus on the music. I noticed that the people I was eating lunch with gave me some funny looks. I wanted to explain to them what distracted me so much but I realized that was hopeless. Reminds me of the Rahsaan Roland Kirk "Bright Moments" talk. "Bright Moments is like hearing some music that ain't nobody else heard...".
I've got no regrets about this either.
