The AKG701s are indeed excellent headphones as far as sound quality is concerned and they are also quite comfortable (just try on a pair of Grado SR60s - they can be quite painful to wear after 30 minutes or so). Still, being an "open" design, they will only slightly attenuate outside sounds (unless you play music at levels to mask this - which usually means at levels damaging to your ears). Depends on how important this is -- I can still hear the telephone, converse with my wife, etc while listening to music. If you absolutely need complete isolation from the outside, then no open phone will do this - you will need a closed over-ear or in-ear design. IMO the AKG 701s sound so good and feel great to wear that whether or not they are open or closed becomes a non-issue for me.
