John Dunlavy would be an asset to any industry. I spoke with him a number of times but only met him once.

Although we had very different design philosophies and he was definitely arrogant, he had a huge amount of integrity. I never dealt with him but it was plain to see by anyone in the audio industry, that his loudspeakers were built to the standard he espoused. Very well built with very high quality components in designs rigorously tested.

I met John at the end of the CES 5 or 6 years ago when I went to an off-site hotel to see my friends John and Toni Ulrick from Spectron who were exhibiting with Dunlavy. The show had not gone well I could tell which is always the risk when you locate way off the beaten path.

John gave me a demo and we spoke for maybe 30 minutes. Although he kept up a promotional banter, he was clearly mentally and physically exhausted. Shows have that effect especially the older you get but no one should allow themselves to get so extremely tired at his age. I knew that show was maybe the last chance for the company's revival. What a huge amount of pressure.

If he had given as much to himself as he gave to the audio industry (and audio hobbyists) he might still be giving the less technically accomplished their comeupance. And we'd all be better for it.

Regards,
John Meyer
