Re: BBE - Is there anyone who does not need it?

I've used a BBE for more than 20 years now and couldn't imagine listening without one. My current model in the 482, it too was a whopping $200.00 new.

A few other "Blast from the Past" I continue to use, because they are as effective today as when they were introduced.

- Carver's "Digital time lens". They still come up on ebay every once in while. (I still wont listen to a CD without this circuit in the signal path).

- 3DBX dynamic range expander. By far, the best of this processor was the last produced digital series before BSR bought the company and discountinued the home line. Basically, everything sounds better when run through this back box.

One word of cation with the BBE and DBX. These are "very powerfull" black boxes and must be used with MODERATION. Used correctly, they can dramatically improve a system. Overused incorrectly and they'll send you running out of the room.

It was my experience back in the hey day of these products, that most EVERYONE overused them and distroyed their systems sound. The thought was that if a little sounded good, alot would sound even better. NOT...

I believe that's one of the many misconceptions about these particular black boxes. It also should be noted that not all black boxes are created equal.

I suppose that's why these products are so widely used professionally in recording studios and at live events, by people who know how to use them correctly.
