Re: My suggestions, but...

There's more than a few ways to skin the cat here, but this is a great starting system. Stick with well-known entry-level brands that can be easily upgraded if desired. For a beginner, simpler is much better IMHO. and most any of the rec'd stuff will be LOTS better than the Sony stuff IMHO.

I'd rec an NAD 320bee integrated paired with PSB Image 25s (if going with the bookshelf) or 45s (if he could squeeze in a floorstander). Add an Oppo Universal player and some Kimber Tonic cables, and you're at a nice starting point for much less than $2K. The NAD can be had on Audiogon used for well under $300, and is a nice unit with very nice sound. PSBs are great all around performers, just solid stuff.

DD, you might add a pair of 24" speaker stands you could hide in a closet, and bring them out to put monitors on when listening to your system. Just a thought. Might allow you to get the best out of your speaks when it really counts, and not bother anybody when it doesn't. Check out Audio Advisor, they've got a nice selection of reasonably priced stands, as well as cables. (Not affiliated, etc, etc).

Good luck!
