some random thoughts...

- the best values are in used gear (especially when starting out). DIY offers even better value if you are so inclined.
- there are many good gear suggestions here, dont get too hung up on any one model or one brand.
- when you get to upgrades, consider only one component at a time.
- it takes many weeks/months to really experience a component.
- if you cannot hear a big difference immediately, it is not worth the upgrade.
- i really like 'bruce from dc' s modest expectations principle.
- pay attention to the room and placement, there is a lot of free improvements to be gained there.
- the quality of the recording makes an enormous difference, especially when evaluating gear.
- do not put speakers on a bookshelf. Also,floorstanders often takeup as much room as stand mounted ones.
- dont rush into any decision and have fun.
