I've read much of this thread, and I'm still not sure if your discontent is with the content of the recordings or the reproduction of the recordings. If it's the former, perhaps your tastes are changing such that your rock music collection isn't satisfying to you anymore, at least not for dedicated listening. Maybe you're developing an appreciation for qualities that your current selection isn't providing. I've lived through a shift in musical preferences myself, and can vouch for how confusing it initially can be.
If your problem is with the latter, I've read comments from people who rediscovered rock music after hearing it through speakers with 1st-order crossovers. I have no experience in this regard, and can't really relate to the problem: I can listen to material ranging from Fugazi to Iron And Wine, from pretty much any source, anywhere, at any time, and be happy with it. But, the sound of 1st-order crossovers seems to have been a revelation for some people, and since you say that you still enjoy live performances of rock music, maybe 1st-order speakers are something that you would respond to?
