... and arrived as something of a sceptic with a mind full of thoughts about snake oil, gold bricks, etc...First impressions were based on the purely visual aesthetics of the device as the demo only took place a couple of hours into the gathering (~30 audio-lunatics attended).
Looking something vaguely reminiscent of an artifact found near Roswell, NM - the appearance did nothing to dispel these initial thoughts...
Then came the demo...
The system used comprised an analog source plus a phono stage, a digital source, an amplifier and a pair of speakers:
T/T: Rega Planar 3 + RB250 + Ortofon Jubilee
P/S: Trichord Diablo
CDP: Marantz of some description
Amp: Valve Audio Predator (local 200wpc hybrid integrated)
Spk: Spendor S9eFirst up was a vinyl recording by Holly Cole...
Surprise, surprise! I could actually detect a difference between the before and after playback! Not significant, by any means, there was, however, a discernible improvement in spatial cue reproduction resulting in more stable imaging and a broader, deeper soundstage. Apart from that, there was not much else to note.
Next up was a vinyl recording by Chris Jones...
Here the difference between before and after was more marked and was in different areas of the performance - namely in tighter and better defined bass notes and a reduced low-level noise floor with a slight improvement in vocal timbre.
Lastly, the same Chris Jones track, but this time from a CD...
This surprised the Hell out of me as the difference was more marked than on both the vinyl sample tracks played. Bass deeper and much better defined, voice clearer and other instrumentation more easily discernible.
How does it work? I have absolutely no idea!
Does it work at all? Yes - but with unexplainable differences in effect and degree.
Would I buy one? No bloody way - not at a cost equivalent to three record cleaning machnes!!!
