It may be somewhat reliable for identifying a difference - that there is one - but not at qualitatively assessing the difference.
That's the reason many audiophiles are ultimately unhappy with the sound after they make an upgrade or two.
Different may seem better at first, but it takes long term listening to really determine whether it's an improvement.
