sit down and listen to Rage against the machine....? I know what you mean, some of this stuff was not meant to be listened to critically and so will never make it to a serious listening session. Whenever I listened to Rage I was usually full of beer and jumping about... so it will never sound the same again. The mind likes to try new stuff... so why not listen to new stuff. It could be that you are just bored of some of it, as you say, you blasted this stuff at college. My system plays alot of rock and punk stuff quite well, but also plays classical and almost anything else.... I want to listen to all and everything on my system. But at 33 your not 'old' so maybe you need something new to remind you how you used to feel when you heard new exciting music. Perhaps the fact it was new is what made you enjoy it... and you didn't feel old then.
