Some dealers have trade-up policies that will allow the buyer to trade in a new purchase for full value within a year, so long as the price is higher on the trade up item. For most gear, I don't think it takes very much time for an experienced listener to come to a judgment on its merit. If I don't like it almost immediately, the "upgrade" is not worth it. But it is easy to be seduced by the one or two things a new component does well. It often takes a little longer to identify the aspects of performance that one does not like and will come to be a long-term annoyance. That is where an extended audition (several days) is useful.
