i don't have much experience with subs, but have added the smallest Hsu sub to my system lately. Out of the box & sitting on the floor with the factory spikes it was boomy & obnoxious.Once i installed a trio of mapleshade brass spikes (removing the plastic factory spikes) and set the sub ontop of a mapleshade florstanding speaker platform, which is also spiked, all the boominess went away & left nothing but killer musical deep bass.
So, due to this i'm of the camp that your room, and specifically how the sub interacts with the floor, can make or break sub satisfaction. And, like any other component in this hobby subs can be tweaked for better performance.
Similar experience with a friends sub which sat on a hardwood floor for months. I let him borrow one of my Aurelex Gamma Pads (or subdude) & the boom disappeared and he could turn the volume up on it and enjoy music. the sound is amazing now and his neighbors below can't hear nothin'.
no experience with other mfgr subs...
