Re: Subwoofer

You can find used REL Storm III's and smaller REL subs for just about $1000 or less but shipping may be expensive.

I have the REL Storm III that does a great job of filling in the lower frequencies. It integrates seamlessly with my main setup. It's very versatile with filter adjustments in clearly marked discrete steps. The REL can be hooked up directly to the output posts of a power amp or via line-level from a preamp or LFE output from a home theater processor.

There's a real art to properly setting up sub woofers and some dealers go through extensive factory training to learn the finer points.

The main problem I find in the down firing subs like my REL, is that you will not get well defined and tight impactful bass. Yes, you will get a deeper low end that fills the room nicely but not like having a larger set of main speakers pointing right at you. I suspect a good forward firing sub may be more to your liking if clean tight "impact" is important to you.

Just for the fun of it (after inmate JerryS suggested it), I tried laying my REL Storm III on it's side with the speaker facing me rather than pointing down at the floor. I actually preferred it this way but it sure looked weird.

My REL is boxed up and has been in storage for the past few years. I'm getting better bass reinforcement in my new space with my main speakers so I no longer use the REL. The old place had tall ceilings and was a real "bass suck" black hole.
