The value of a dealer audition

By and large, most audiophiles seem to agree that to fully gauge the true character of a piece of gear and whether it jibes with one's own taste, an extended audition period (one month?) is necessary. I certainly find this the minimum time I myself need. I used to think I was less 'golden-eared' than most when I started out a few years ago. I'd hear a piece at a dealer's, and when the expected eyebrow went up (as in: 'so what do you think?'), the best reply I had was a shrug. As in, I_honestly_don't_know if I like it or not.

Sure, I can say it has (for example) 'deep bass', or 'high level of detail', etc. But is it for ME? You mean you want to know NOW?

So, who actually buys stuff in this way? I suppose this is why Audiogon exists, and even thrives.
