They were trying to sell expensive CD players when the "spectre of high definition" audio formats were on the horizon. People were afraid to invest thousands of dollars on a technology they were afraid would soon be obsolete.
But now ten years later, the buying public has finally come to their senses and realized that the promise of a format that appealed only to audiophiles was just a pipedream. Now there are plenty of companies that are selling high performance CD-only players. I guess the "spectre" wasn't so scary after all. It just took a decade for people to overcome their fears...
