It may come as a surprise to you, but not all soup cans and strings sound alike. I've done some extensive comparisons, and found Campbell soup cans to be generally superior to Heinz, and string made of hemp sounds much better than nylon string. (I call the latter "second string.") The April issue Recommended Components will have sections on "Soup Cans" and "Strings."
