A small point.

I agree that good drummers can play with appropriate dynamics.

Most everyday drummers, however, don't have the luxury of equipping their kits appropriately, especially with regards to head selection, for every gig. It takes hours and a lot of work to switch out and tune the heads of a drum kit.

Most rock drummers use pretty dead-sounding heads that only come alive when hit pretty hard. These are also the heads that sound techs prefer when miking up a kit.

If that same drummer steps into a jazz or church gig he will probably hit too hard in an effort to get the drums to sing.

We face the same problem with our son, who plays unmiked with a rock band yet also plays in church. We opted for heads that have good dynamics and nice tone at the low end of the scale, and he's good at playing soft. With the rock band, though, he has to hit pretty hard and the sound isn't quite right.

Someday he can have two (or more) kits and each can be optimized for the task at hand. Til then it's a compromise.
