actually written music such as you describe, Stalin would have had him shot or sent to the gulag. As a result, his music is so conservative that it's not even considered "modern."His music is terrific, though, and so is his concerto, so perhaps you had an unsympathetic soloist.
You might see if your local library has a recording of the Fifth Symphony, which is where pretty much everyone starts with Shostakovich. Once you get acquainted with his sound-world, you may find you really dig it.
