Lots of good advice posted, but while a room may be designed for generally good acoustics

when you're talking about "perfect", I believe the speakers must be selected first, then design the room around their characteristics.

For example, my floorstanding, five-driver, three-way system requires placement some distance from the front wall for better imagining without loosing too much bass, a wide separation (8-12 feet) between channels and a distance of at least a meter (preferably 4-5 feet) from the side walls. Seating should be at an equilateral distance from the speakers. A smaller box speaker may require less distance from the front wall for bass reinforcement, placement closer together, and a listening distance about half of what I need. A third design such as a planar dipole may allow placement within 12-18 inches of the sidewall.

Each of these three examples would result in different shapes and dimensions for their respective "perfect" environments.

Once again in this hobby, the only universal rule is that there are no universal rules!
