Re: Pros vs. Vandys

I had Avalon Eidolons in Walnut Burl powered by a Plinius SA250 MKIV with all Tara Labs cabling including The Zero interconnect, with Wadia separates for a front end, all purchased new. I sold all this equipment to move into a new condo. I recently purchase PMC AML1's new. I would not return to the earlier system. I feel, first of all a premium price is paid for all that fancy woodworking. I find the biggeest fault of home audiophile type speakers are all the wire and circuitry in those crossovers trying to make up for the deficiencies of the drivers. Also, the manaufacturer has no way of knowing what amplification will be used with their product. With a powered speaker you are getting rid of that crossover and expensive speaker cable. The drivers are connected directly to the power amps after an electronic crossover. In the case of the PMC's they have a 5 1/2 ft. transmission line behind the woofer for very clear and deep bass. I do not like ports yet everyone uses them. It is a very cheap implementation. The bass drops off dramatically after the resonant frequency is reached. Without a 150 pound enclosure that requires several people to place effectively you have more placement options. There are reviews of these PMC's on "6 Moons," "Audio Ideas Guide," in their archives and other on line magazines. Hi-Fi+ did an extensive review of both these and the ATC equivalent. If interested there are now 2 pairs of the AMC's on Audiogon. The reviews will give you some idea of the sound. The implementation will give you plenty of living space, no sacrifice in sound quality and your friends need not fear hernias!
