If I'm in the mastering studio with the artist, who acknowledges that indeed this is what he/she was going for and likes the recording - can we not all agree that at this point in the (hypothetical) recording, this is the highest fidelity of the recording? -- "Fidelity" in the sense that it is the truest representation to the original - not "Fidelity" in the sense that whoever spent the most money has the highest "Fidelity".There are plenty of artists happy with their recordings, so this is not a stretch.
If this is so, and I can't see how it is not, then if you want to reproduce the intent of the artist, you would want to reproduce the environment at this moment. No, not everyone has a studio. Okay - what else can we do to get closer to this moment?
