Re: Studio components best for Hi Fi - here's why

If by studio equipment you mean near-field monitors and guitar amps, that is not really a valid concept. You made a huge jump in your logic, passing right over the fact that no one has a studio, or probably anything even close to it, in their home to provide the premise for your "second best" conclusion.

And no one has access to the material that is being played back in the studio. The products we purchase, be it CD, LP, SACD, DVD, or RTR (my goodness, we like our acronyms, don't we?), is a long way removed from what an artist or engineer hears during playback in a studio. There are many levels of degradation and processing that occur between that initial recording and the disc you plop onto your favorite player. No matter what level of quality the playback system, it can only try to retrieve (and usually fail) what information is on the disc, which is probably not very close to the original recording unless great care has been taken at every step. In order to reproduce what the original recording sounded like, a home sound system must play some tricks on our ears in order that we buy into the illusion. Most "studio" equipment, as opposed to most "audiophile" or hi-fi equipment, is not intended to be or capable of playing those tricks.

And to say that studio equipment is accurate is a pretty big claim. A lot of it is chosen for ruggedness, portability, cost, even appearance, convenience of use, etc. There are some studios that take a lot of care in selecting the gear they use in the playback chain, and those items are usually more of the audiophile nature than the basic studio stuff, because they understand that the basic "studio" quality gear just isn't musical or accurate enough to give a realistic impression of the original event.

Peace,
Tom E
