Buying refurbished can be a great way to save money BUT ...

... a few things I would check into are:

- Is the reason the unit was refurb'ed disclosed?

- If the refurb'ed unit still has problems, who pays for the return of the unit to the warranty center?

- If you get it back from the warranty center and it still has problems, do you have to pay to send it in again?

- If you get it back from the warranty center and it still has problems, can you get a replacement unit at some point?

I finally gave away a nice cd player that I bought as a refurb because it had a highly unpredictable problem that would lock up the player. However; I kept getting it back from the warranty center saying it checked out fine. The shipping costs *far* outweighed what I saved over buying a new unit.

Also, it would depend on what I was buying. I'd be much more comfortable with buying a pair of speakers that had been refurbed because of a cosmetic defect than a cdp (or anything with lots of moving parts) for mechanical reasons.

In the interest of balance, I have bought refurb'ed items that woked and looked flawlessly. But my experience wih two cdp's was a nightmare. Granted, there's a certain roll of the dice in refurb. Many of them, probably most, work out fine.
