the original Quad ESL, aka ESL-57, is a completely different design from the later models. The concept behind the ESL-63 and the later models is the same, although the later models may have improvements in panel construction, frame rigidity, and in the case of the ESL-989 and 2905, extra panels for more bass. The original Quads (which I own) have a midrange/tweeter panel with bass panels on either side. They also have batting and felt pads on the back side so that they are a dipole in the bass only. The ESL-63 and later models have panels with concentric circles on them which are fed with a delay line to simulate a point source, and I believe they are dipolar thru the entire frequency range.
