Except I read the stars and tattoos as different. Apparently the sneetches are born with or without stars on their bellies. Difference being that tattoos are almost always a matter of choice, and for a variety of reasons, appearing different being major among them.As the wiki indicates, the story is more about racism than anything else. One thing tattoos are NOT about is racism (Holocaust aside - a major example of involuntary tattooing and obviously not part of the ornament ethos), being enjoyed by one and all.
