Re: This really IS the debate, isn't it???

"First, does digital produce less of some distortions but more of others? Second, are the analog distortions, while perhaps greater, more euphonic?"

Not Euphonic, LESS audible.

"Obviously an analogous argument exists for tubes versus solid state"

Yes it cuts right throw that argument as well. Of course the distortions are somewhat different (than digital ones I mean) but the question is the same, what is the distortion, how much is there, and what is the audibility threshold for said distortion.

If you can't hear 5% 2nd harmonic distortion then who cares if an amp makes 2%?? However, if you can hear 0.01% of 11th harmonic distortion then a whole lot of people will care if their amp makes this kind of distortion.

The audible thresholds on digital jitter seem to be very low indeed and it is largely jitter that determines the "sound" of a cd transport. Of course in DACs it is not only jitter but also the quality of the analog output stage (most of which are populated by opamps...not my first choice).

BTW, how are you liking your Monarchy SM70 pro monoblocks? I just got a Monarchy M24 DAC/pre after owning the Monarchy 22Bse Dac for more than 8 years. The M24 is a fantastic DAC and inexpensive too. If you are looking for some top end digital think about it.
