Video Monitors

I have lately consulted a fair amount in the video area, and been exposed to a number of the technologies.

All plasmas may have that unnatural crispness you have commented on. Some are better than others. They also almost always have over-saturated color that cannot be tuned to completely fix it. I suspect that this is less a function of the technology, and more a function of manufactures designing to match their perceptions of customer expectations. Plasmas do have excellent contrast though.

I find that some technologies of rear and front projection TVs have better fidelity. I have not seen a DLP set that does this well, except for the ultra expensive high-end ones. Even those are not my personal kettle of fish. I prefer three chip solutions that use a seperate chip or light panel for Red, Green, and Blue (most consumer DLPs are one chip). The new Sony SXRD sets are by far my favorite followed by good three chip LCD sets. While LCD sets may lack contrast they have better color fidelity when implemented properly.

The Sony's can be calibrated pretty well and come pretty close to neutral, but may have too much contrast in default settings.
