The lab where I did my postdoc was using high mass and air suspension tables. The tables were of a honeycomb design that while made of steel and high mass were lighter than the equivalent granite that was often used in the past. They were more rigid and better damped as well because of the internal honeycomb structure. This table/air suspension design was used with AFM and SNOM (Atomic Force Microscopy and Scanning Nearfield Optical Microscopy). These two techniques are EXTREMEMLY sensitive to vibration including airborne and building transmitted. This is why a special isolated room (yes the room was decoupled from the building) was built and extreme wall damping (similar to an anechoic chamber) was used as well. The only servo systems in this setup were the AFM piezo actuators and their feedback system.
