Hey Pooba,I'm a 22-year-old inmate up in Vancouver...
This is a brutal hobby if you're a gear slut. My goal has been to as good a system as is reasonably possible while I can afford to be young and stupid, and have pretty much no financial responsibility. I suspect it's a lot easier to drop a few K-bills on a power amp that nearly outweighs me now, before I'm married with kids and a mortgage...
I've lost money "compromising" only to end up upgrading to what I really wanted (but talked myself out of) in the first place. Don't bother. Save up. Eat KD and cuppa-noodles. And for the love of god, buy used! There are a few great hi-fi specific classifieds which will help you immensely.
I've had a lot of luck buying things used, trying them for a while, and selling again for minimal if any loss when it doesn't do it for me.
Never forget - garbage in, garbage out. You can never properly fix something which was buggered up further back in the chain. This applies from the room in which what you are listening to was recorded, to the room in which you are playing the recording back in, and everything in-between!
The Asylum is a nutty place... nobody is capable of being truely 100% objective, since we all have different ears and experiences. Everything is relative. There is tons of knowledge in the archives and collective brains of the inmates, you just have to know how to take advantage of it.
Cheers, and good luck.
