The CD's are placed on end in the drawers (easy viewing of titles) and best yet they are out-of-sight when the drawers are closed. If you are in the LA area there is a reasonably priced shop on Robertson (across from the Ivy) with a nice selection of both contemporary and "with age" Tansu's. They are produced in Korea as well (might look in Korea Town).
The bottom five drawers of our large cabinet hold approx. 1200 CD's.
If your taste is modern look into Art Deco medical cabinets with appropriately sized/shallow, space saving, drawers. Kind of pricey the last time I looked, but some killer pieces/designs.
Another option would be vintage lingerie cabinets (lots of closely spaced shallow drawers).
Have not done so yet, but hope to store LP's in a living room coat closet once it's properly lighted/shelved.
Lp's can also be stored well away from the TT as all you need is a small storage bin (near the TT) for to be played/to be filed LP's.
Ikea and the like are fine, but when I can afford to do so I prefer investing in real furniture (right now we can't even budget Ikea;-).
