yes this came up a good deal in discussions after hearing the Rotary Woofer. The key differences were the lower mass (very very low in Thigpen unit), the frequency transient ability (it is just a well established mag/voice coil technology) and its frequency range of 1 to 40/60 hz and ability to be louder at 1 hz than it is at 20hz.Sameness in using a rotary motion to vastly increase air movement, smallish size in comparison to direct radiator solutions for the frequency range target and significant output below 20hz.
I heard the Contra once and not for that long. It played single note (bass ped or pipe tones) very well, but got more lost on mulitple tones (bass drum and standup bass harmonics). I've only heard generated tones on the Thigpen unit, but the science behind the transient signal transistion (voice coil/mag motor) is well established at this.
The Thigpen is spawned from same approach to solving a problem (move air by rotation than by a piston), but doesn't seem to stand upon the ContraBass experience.
