Re: Spending more on speakers is often a waste of money and counter productive as well

I heard the Wilson Watt/puppy 7 with some of the best electronics money can buy: Full DCS stack, VTL TL7.5, and new VTL S400 amp. The sound? Very good indeed but not the best sound I heard at this show. When you consider how much it cost then I am even less impressed. I thought another nearby exhibit with Martin Logan Ascent speakers and a full Theta how theater rig (David transport, Cassablanca processor, and Dreadnaught II amp) sounded much better actually. I would argue that the Watts had better electronics behind them than the ML (but the Theta stuff is certainly very good) but the sound was limited by the speakers. How would the ML speakers sound with the rig behind the Wilson Watts? My guess is that it would be an improvement over the Watts since the sound was already better IMO with the Theta gear.
The moral of this story:
If your electronics are very good then a change of speakers can make a huge leap in the overall quality of your system. If your speakers are very good they may reveal your electronics to be crap, so in that sense I agree with you. In this case upgrading the electronics will make a huge step forward in quality. If both are bad (relative term not necessarily absolutely bad) then you may still have pleasant sound but it will not provide the realism of a really good system.
