Yeah it is fun, I agree :)
My own experiments also showed that the proposed configuration generaly works better in smaller rooms so I can confirm Your results. Although in bigger rooms I noticed that playing louder helps to achieve more realistic image.
But I didn't try it in a room as big as Yours - I live in Europe - You know - tiny cars, tiny apartments etc. ;)
I think that a line array system would be especially effective in such a configuration. I'm going to built a line array in near future. I will report my results.
