Re Speakers, I'm in speaker first camp, but thats been talked to death. As to a newbie, I would always recommend a large monitor type or smaller floor standing dynamic speaker to start. They are easier to set up, more versatile, and survive moves to different homes/apartments better than panels, electrostats and large full range dynamics. And, if you ever need that extra bass you can get a sub.
