Re: Beatles rumor

Ringo was hired because he was a better drummer more so than because Pete Best was good-looking & got girls. George Martin recorded 'Love Me Do' with Ringo playing, but also did a take with the session drummer, Andy White. The version that made it onto the original single was, I believe, the one with Andy White. By the time the Please Please Me album came out the Beatles had already managed a couple of #1 singles & the version with Ringo was used. The Andy White version kinda got lost in the shuffle but I think it resurfaced on the Anthology. Ringo wasn't allowed to play drums on the B-side, though, P.S. I Love You. He played only maracas on that. George Harrison was hired because he was a better guitar player than either Paul or John, not because they felt sorry for him. The age difference at the time was significant, but Lennon knew the band would be better with him than without him.

Here's a link to a page that gives the much-mocked Ringo some props, which he deserves. I think Moon was better, but overplaying is something that few do well, & he inspired way too many overplayers. If I were King, players like Peart would be prosecuted for crimes against music. Ditto Portnoy, who I was remotely friendly with back in high school.
