I think I confused you

Dear Doug--

I think I confused you. I do not have a problem with a paper trial, even for a $100 cost receiver. I was contrasting the bureaucratic folderol from someone who can't get it together over six months to send a $500 receiver (he is a name I am sure you would recognize from the PR field, and I am sure the problem is not with him), with the smoothness with which MBUSA can handle a car loan, so to speak.

If you are suggesting that any certain company might be quicker to build an amp for Tom Gillett than for me, that is fine, I have no problem with that. But the fact of the matter is that this e-zine darling of a company told me (perhaps they were lying) that they had no stock of an item which more than one AA inmate urgently told me I had to review.

I have a steady stream of review equipment pass through here from all over the world, from companies that have stock on the shelves and the means to get it here. The point I was making is that at least half the time I have approached a small company that as far as I know has never had coverage in Stereophile, they have a reason they can't submit gear for review, or promise to do so and then drop the ball.

Let me remind you that the start of this discussion was the monthly "Stereophile Just Reviewed (fill in an integer) More Pieces of Musical Fidelity Gear!!!!!" grumbling.

My point is that there are reasons for that that do not involve corruption, as has frequently been asserted here.

And my intent also was to let people know that if they want gear from micro companies reviewed by me, I have lost enthusiasm or willingness to truffle-pig it. I took the initiative on AA and went forward with the suggestions people made (except low-power tubes, passive pres, and one-driver speakers), and the results were, except for the Sugden, nil. (I already had the MMGs on my list.)

No problem, no hard feelings. There are enough companies out there that do have their acts together. I was just explaining in advance my unwillingness to enter into, from now on, discussions about why Stereophile or any of its writers has not reviewed a piece of gear from (real facts here) a company with a placeholder for a website and a disconnected toll-free number.

Cordially,

John
