I've heard that too, but it was for machine guns in world war II, I think on B-52s. Again, 9-yard gunbelts. (But that was the History Channel, and I've seen them make stuff out of thin air before) ;-) But according to Metrallas link, the gunbelts didn't actually reach 27 feet in length. The one for yards on sailing vessels looks like a good one. Sounds like a sailor, "argh, we'll give 'em the whole 9 yards, blackbeard".

Here's an idea. People had not yet learned to count in more than single digits, so 9 was the biggest number they could come up with. "Duh, we used the, ummmmm, whole 9 yards". hehehe

And which sounds more like a "baker's dozen". It's not 11 or 13, as some would say. It's however many came out of the mix when aiming to make 12.
