Sorry, I believe you are quite wrong

I freely acknowledge that your post has excited in me a negative reaction which may or may not be justified. I may be (I fear) as well known for my sharp wit and ready temper as for anything else. Part of this reaction comes from the inference I have drawn, which is that you seem to think that Stereophile and its writer have been taken in by a re-tread design, and by further inference, that they lack adequate knowledge of the history of the technology they cover.

However, I question how carefully you read the article in question, as distinct from looking at a picture. While horizontally-dispersing speakers have been known at least since the 1930s, and Stewart Hegeman's work was in the 1960s, I believe that the B&O speaker incorporates developments which are indeed useful, novel, non-obvious, and are not merely cumulative of prior advancements in the art.

Specifically, what David Moulton and his collaborator developed--and which was I believe awarded a patent by the US Patent and Trademark Office--is an elliptical waveguide which in fact imparts a rather strong directivity, such that on-axis and power response are unusually similar.

I will cc David on this so he can take part as he sees fit. But to the extent your post implies that Stereophile is guilty of lazy or sloppy reporting, I strenuously object, and suggest you dig a little deeper. Nobody is perfect, but I can tell you from first-hand experience, that at Stereophile the pressure is always on to get it right.

Cordially,

John Marks
