Re: static/hiss in speakers - could it be the wireframe shelf?

it could be dirty AC.... i would try a power conditioner to see how much of the hiss you can reduce.

I would say that if you ARE getting a little hum....try disconnecting the cable-tv cable from your TV and see if the hum is reduced/eliminated from the amp..... sometimes the ground-loop can also be the culprit in the introduction of distortion into the system.... probably not the hiss though... the reason you get the hum from the mids/bass and not the tweeter is because of the ground loop causing a 60Hz hum (below the xover for the tweeter)... you might also hear it from your sub!

if your power cord is hot/neutral (without safety ground) and is hard-wired like you described.... you have several options. you can replace the entire cord (probably voiding your warranty, NOT RECOMMENDED) or you can add some external shielding to the cord that you can ground to the wall (copper-braided mesh, etc..).

The other thing is keep your power cables separated from your audio/video cables in the back of your equipment. since your power cables sound like they may not be shielded, you can induce trouble into you audio/video cables by being close to your power cables.... just keep the power cables appart from your other cables!
