Eric, a good, worry free combo would be tube preamp with ss amp. The tube preamp has a greater impact on the quality of the sound then a tube vs ss amp. Also, tube preamps are very reliable. I've gone back and forth with tube amps for years. IMO tube amps (if properly matching the speaker load) are a bit more accurate/natural then ss. BUT, you have to battle with the output tubes-biasing, balancing, shorting out, blown fuses, etc... The fact is that output tubes made today (China, Russia, East Europe) are not as reliable/durable as U.S. NOS tubes. But U.S. NOS tubes are hard to find and very expensive. Good luck.
