When initially setting 5.1 speaker calibration levels, one uses a Radio Shack SPL meter to set the prepro's volume levels for all speakers to 75dB at the listening position with the help of a signal source DVD called VE (Video Essentials). To do this for the main speakers, I simply put the 5.1 prepro's volume control at 0dB for reference level output (this is prepro dependant), then set my 2-channel preamp volume to a position that registered 75dB on the SPL meter to the signal from the VE DVD. My stereo preamp's volume position registered 12 O'clock when producing the 75dB reference strength.
For center, surrounds and sub, I used the 5.1 prepro's adjustment level for each speaker to match the 75dB level coming from the VE DVD for each channel.
When listening to a movie, all I need to do is adjust the entire soundfield (all six speakers) volume with the prepro's volume control. My normal prepro listening volume is anywhere from -3dB to -9dB from reference according to the volume control on my prepro.
Hope that helps.
