John,
it actually doesnt have a 3 pos switch, its got 2 on/off buttons on the front. One says surround, one says main; main is the primary (front 2 channels). When you press the surround button it engages the second 2 channels. Im pretty sure i figured out why the right channel isnt working (I looked inside the case and found a blown fuse) that was just a quick inspection, i havent gone through to see if that is actually what is causing R not to work. Ok as far as the age of the thing, her exact words were "Its old as he**" to which my reply was "Ill see what i can do!" she didnt know the power ratings on it either, and the only marking on it as far as loads go is to use 8 ohm minimum speakers. As Far as Dolby 5.1....no, if shes right about the age i think they were still working on Dolby 2.0 when this thing was made ;)Right now im only using one speaker to test each channel, a Rockford Fosgate RFZ-1810. (10" subwoofer 8 ohms load w/ 100 watts RMS) (I know this is the ghetto way of doing it but it was the only 8 ohms speaker I have right now!)
